Table Football is a game that dates back to the late 19th century although the game that we may recognise would probably date to the early 1920’s.  This is a game that is known by several names including “Footsy” and “Baby-foot” among many others.  Frequently played in clubs, bars, pubs and even many schools, smaller “table top” versions of the game can be bought for players at home.  The International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) promotes table football across the world, and whilst it does not organise any tournaments itself, it does ensure that the soccer tables used in international competitions, meet recognised requirements.

Asides from the table top games the variation in the types and styles of table football, is pretty broad.  Little “micro” tables are available that are only 80 centimetres in length but still as sturdy and as well built as the full size games.  At the other extreme, a table football game was made in Berlin for eleven players per team that was seven metres in length.  The average game table is more likely to be between 4 and 5 feet in length.  The balls used in the game which may be made from a variety of materials including wood, cork, marble and metal, affects the speed and control of the game . It is a fun game for everybody and those that have mastered skills in the past might find they still have them. For those who have never played before, it just takes practice to learn the best techniques. The combination of the ball texture and the “player” texture (good quality players would be made from aluminium), may ultimately affect the skill of the human player.

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a pool table that have an effect on the price and quality of your table and therefore, your game. Note that the term “pool tables” refers to the table used to play billiards, snooker, and all other cue-sports similar to this. The differences between these games are the rules and sets of balls used, not the table itself.

Pool tables are constructed in a wide variety of sizes and there can be great variation in the quality and construction methods used. The main reasons for the range in sizes in pool tables for sale are simply that an authentic full-size table is huge and a consideration of the various costs of a full-size table. Pool tables are invariably a perfect rectangle with the width being half the length. A standard full-size English Billiards table measures 12′ long, and, therefore, 6′ wide! These days it is not difficult to locate tables measuring nine, eight, and seven feet long respectively, which are more realistically suited for people’s homes.

When buying a pool table it is important to consider the construction materials used. Of these the surface is by far the most important feature. If you’re after a basic, cheap table, new discount pool tables which use a wooden surface with cloth overlay can be found for less than US$400. However, if you are after a more authentic table, which will ultimately give you a much better game, then there is no substitute for slate. Any serious cue-sports enthusiast will not settle for anything less than a slate table which will not flex or suffer the deformities that wooden-surfaced tables are subject to. Slate is a very hard, dense stone which is quarried and cut into single, solid slabs the full size of the table, machined to near-perfect flatness and covered with cloth to make the surface of the table. Unless subjected to absolutely brutal punishment it will not chip, dent, flex, or be affected by moisture. The slab used for tables will vary anywhere between a full 2 1/2″ thick for much older tables and, more recently, about one inch in thickness. Generally speaking the thicker your slab the better, however, the biggest drawback with slate tables is that they are truly monumental in weight, especially for larger, older tables. These can weigh as much as 1000 pounds! Along with such a large, heavy cut of solid stone come increased handling and construction costs.

Pool is a fun game to play and can offer hours and even years of sport and entertainment. Before buying new pool tables, it is necessary to make sure that an individual should make an informed purchase by doing some good research into the process of buying one. Here are a few ideas that might help you make an informed decision.

It is the overall size of the table which gives it its dimension, not the size of the slate on its own. To stop any further mix ups, pool tables are measured a bit differently to snooker tables.

Pool tables found in pubs usually measure 7′ x 4′. These are the external dimensions. The internal dimension, or playing area, is 6′ x3′ that is 12′ off each side lost to the sides of the table. The heights of almost all pool tables are 32′.

Pool Tables
Pool is a very popular workplace game, given its straightforward rules and the short duration of each game when compared with snooker. Many players find playing pool far more enjoyable and entertaining than playing snooker on a half-size table. Such is its popularity that many offices hold men’s, ladies and mixed leagues and knockout competitions. Amongst the wide range of products available, the Riley 6′ Deluxe Pool table should be a suitable size for most office staff rooms. With a professional-looking, tasteful blue nylon cloth, its playing surface is 11″ x 2′ 6″. The table has adjustable feet to ensure that it remains level and features a ball return system. It is supplied with a full set of accessories, including traditional spots / stripes pool balls, two 4′ cues, cue chalk, a triangle and table brush. For establishments with a little more space and budget, the 7′ Deluxe “Black Cat” Pool Table has a heavy MDF bed which plays similarly to a slate bed. Its competition quality cushions are complemented by stylish electric blue baize. This extremely sturdy table has bolt-on, chrome-plated, self-levelling legs and a full ball return system. It is supplied with a full set of deluxe accessories and carries a one-year warranty.

Table Tennis
Break room table tennis tables are extremely popular with those seeking some cardiovascular exercise during their breaks. Space is a significant factor in many cases, as room is needed both for the table itself and for players to move around it easily. For offices with very limited space, a BCE 6′ folding table tennis table may provide a solution. Complete with net, post, bats and balls, its folding legs mean it can easily be stored away when not in use. For break and lunch rooms where space is not an issue, a full-size 9′ table may be more appropriate.

Table Football
The almost iconic table football, or Foosball, is an ever popular and highly competitive pastime for pairs of players. Various types of table are available and their small size is particularly helpful if space is at a premium. Given the sometimes harsh treatment such a table is likely to receive, a heavy-duty model is recommended. The competitively priced BCE “Wembley” Soccer Table should prove ideal. A robustly constructed beech table, 4′ 6″ in length, it features solid bolt-on legs with individual levellers and reinforced sides. It comes complete with a pair of matching scorers and 4 footballs. Additional balls are available in case of loss.

Bars and recreation venues in rural or urban areas offer to their visitors the excitement and the sportsmanship of a famous table-played game, called pool or billiard. On the billiards table’s totally flat surface, pool game fans strike, with the use of a specially designed long wooden stick known as “cue stick,” colorful balls moving them around the table’s area. Pool games attract a variety of publics from around the world, who enjoy the exhilaration of calculating angles and estimating how many strikes it will take them to accomplish their winning goal.

Pool tables are mainly separated into two categories, called carom and pocket tables. In fact, the word “billiards” when standing alone refers to the carom games played on a table without pockets, as opposed to games played on pocket billiards which people recognize as “pools” or also known as “snooker” tables. In Britain and Ireland though, the word “billiards” denotes the “English billiard” exclusively, which is the version of the table with the ball pockets. The difference between the two types is that carom billiards tables do not have six openings four at each table corner and two at the middle of each of the table’s largest sides in which the pool player is called to direct the colorful balls on the surface of the table by striking each one of them, or more than one at a time, with a white ball. The white ball acts as the “mediator” between the cue stick’s point and the round surface of the colored ball the striker aims to hit. If the striker manages to hit the white ball with the right speed and from the right angle then it will in turn hit the colored one which will be directed to fall into one of the tables’ holes. Pool table fans generally refer to pocket billiard games, such as 8-ball, 9-ball, straight pool and one-pocket.

Found in many sizes and styles, billiards or pools are tables in a rectangular shape and are generally twice as long as they are wide. When someone refers to the number of a pool table’s foots this actually denotes its longer sides’ length. Mainly a function of space, the pool table’s length varies. English billiard tables, for example, are 12 feet long, while bars typically offer 7-foot tables. Pool halls tend to have 9-foot tables for more professional players, whereas the once commonly found 10-foot tables are now considered collectible items. Finally, the “felt” or “baize” is the cloth that covers the pool table’s exposed surface and he higher its quality the faster the balls run on its completely flat surface.

Many people who don’t play any cue sports would assume that all games tables are the same.  But from the fifteenth century which the earliest billiard table dates from, distinct differences in the size and materials manufacturers use, have developed. Should anyone be considering purchasing a games table, it is well worth brushing up on your knowledge of the differences.

Traditionally, all cue sports were called “billiards” but over the years, the term billiards has developed into different meanings around the world.  In Britain and Australia for example, “billiards” usually refers exclusively to the game of English billiards but in America and Canada, it refers to cue games generally.  In the UK the term “pocket billiards” is rarely used and “Pool” is the name most often heard for this game. Although “Snooker” is really a variation of pocket billiards, it has been formally recognised as a professional sport in its own right and its rules bear little resemblance to those of Pool.

English Pool Tables (also known as Traditional Pool Tables) vary in length from 6 foot long to 9 foot. Snooker tables range from 6 foot to 12 foot and American Pool Tables vary from 6 foot to 9 ½ foot in length. All types of Pool Tables can be purchased these days in a variety of styles from the traditional to contemporary, or even in “futuristic” styles.  Where space is limited, many pubs and homes may opt to purchase “combination tables” which can be easily converted from a dining table to Pool Table or from a dining table to a multi-games table.
