Dining Tables can be a great addition to your living area, and also to your garden patio. Not only do they create a social atmosphere, but if you choose the right one, the area it’s in can be totally transformed. A dining table can last you for a number of years, so it’s important to chose the right one!

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a dining table such as the size, colour, shape and material it’s made from. It’s important to picture it in your living area or on your garden patio, so a good idea is to take go and browse through a wide range of tables, photographing the best ones. You can then take the photo home and see if the table fits in.

You should consider what the main use of the dining table will be. Are you going to use it to entertain family, friends and work colleagues, or will it be used to dish up food for the kids? There’s a big difference in price between top quality tables and dining tables for every day; however if you chose correctly, you can pick a table that will serve both purposes perfectly, and for relatively cheap!

I have built practically every type of furniture, from decorative high-sryle chairs  to kitchen cabinets, but I’m fascinated by tables. Both the first piece of furniture I made and the first one I designed were tables. It’s an undeniable challenge to create a beautiful chair that is also comfortable, or an elegant entertainment center designed specifically around the sizes and functions of its contents. But for sheer simplicity and design freedom, you can’t beat a table.

Sooner or later, manywoodworkers want to start designing their own furniture. It’s something I strongly encourage; designing greatly increases the satisfaction derived from woodworking. A table is a great place to start. A table has relatively few structural elements and technical requirements: If you’ve got a flat top and a solid support system to hold it up, you have got a functional table. The rest is up to you. Take into account strength requirements, use, and size when planning the piice. Will this be a heavy-duty kid-proof kitchen table or a delicate decorative hall table, for example? Then bring in forms and shapes that please you. Subtle points such as a delicately shaped leg, decorative joinery, a clever handmade mechanism, or a particularly handsome piece of wood can be showcased in a table.

Your piece can be simple or complex, as austere as Shaker or as ostentatious as rococo, based on designs of the 1930s or the 1730s-or something unique and imaginative. Its design can also address a particular need not met by commercially available furniture, like a telephone table, or a backgammon or chess table.

Interior design and redecorating of any kind is a guaranteed way to test any relationship. Even couples that get on brilliantly most of the time can come to blows when choosing furniture, soft furnishings or shades of paint. This is exactly what happened when my boyfriend and I set out one Saturday morning to look for a glass topped coffee table.

We are both strong characters with distinctive views and tastes, which fortunately complement each other most of the time. We both work in high profile decision making roles, and are used to getting out own way, and somehow we clashed over the most innocent of objects, a simple coffee table.

We must have visited nearly fifteen furniture stores, each of which had a great selection of coffee tables, and yes many of them had glass tops. I like to think of myself as modern in my interior design tastes, preferring the minimalist approach, clean sleek lines and practical designs. I like bright stainless steel and stylish vinyl.

Many people go crazy with outdoor lights at Christmastime, covering not only their entire houses, but everything in their yards, including the bushes, trees, mailboxes, outdoor furniture, and picnic tables.  While, naturally, using lights so unabashedly can be garish, it can also be done tastefully, by someone with creative vision, a detailed plan, and a good deal of experience.

If you’re new to outdoor Christmas lighting, it’s best to start small, decorating only a few items, then adding more each year (or not).  Before you begin, make sure that you know how to properly use and handle your lights.  Although they may be safer than those that were popular years ago, they also come in many more varieties, so it’s just as important to read – and heed – the labels, which should always have the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) logo on them.

Before you put up your lights, be certain that they’re designed specifically for outdoor use (this goes for extension cords, too), and replace any that are burned out, as they can drain power from the other bulbs.  Inspect wires for spots that are cracked or worn out, and keep lights and cords away from puddles, and other sources of water.
