When choosing bar tables and chairs the bar owner is faced with a bewildering number of choices from the most modern designs in steel, glass or plastic through to the traditional wooden Colonial, Jacobean or Tudor designs. Prices range from under ten pounds for the cheapest steel framed chairs and even good quality wooden framed chairs can be bought below twenty pounds.

The most traditional styles of bar chairs are taken from old colonial designs and among these the ‘Wheelback’ or ‘Windsor’ chair and the ‘Mates’ or ‘Captains’ chairs are still the most popular choices. These are all wooden chairs and can be a little uncomfortable after a while which is fine if the intention is to get your customers in and out quickly, but if you want to welcome them for an extended stay, during which time they will hopefully spend more money on food and drink, then it’s a good idea to specify chairs with an upholstered seat. Usually this seat has dralon or flatwoven fabric on 1 inch thickness upholstery foam with the fabric stapled to the wooden seat and then finished with decorative brass studding around the edge of the fabric to hide the staples. Bar chairs upholstered in this way look very attractive and many suppliers offer a wide range of patterns and colours of fabric so that the bar chair seats can complement the carpet and decor of the room. The most traditional bar tables are copies of Victorian designs made in cast iron most famously by the Colebrookedale Company. These incorporate very decorative designs sometimes of dolphins or kings or queens heads or the image of Brittania cast into the base. Usually these cast iron tables are finished simply in black, but can be highlighted in gold or painted fully in gold colour to lift the design and give a brighter look to the room. These bar chairs and tables were previously nearly always in dark oak finish for the chairs with dark oak table tops for the bar tables but in more recent years light colours have become popular, with walnut, red mahogany or antique pine being most often chose. Other traditional bar tables use all wooden frames with decoratively turned single or double pedestals being popular. The ‘Refectory’ table is still a welcome choice, having flat table ends that are wasted to add visual interest. The table ends are joined with one or two horizontal stretchers which pass through holes in each end and are secured with simple wooden pegs. This uncomplicated design can still be very effective in a traditionally decorated room when accompanied with Colonial style bar chairs.

Modern bar chairs can be purchased in a wide range of materials with wooden frames still very popular, usually in more angular designs than the traditional bar chairs with gently curving vertical or horizontal slats being the only decoration on the backrest and straight cut rather than ornately turned legs. Many modern bars have moved towards offering comfortable dining for their clients to increase their revenue and to simply attract more people to enjoy their hospitality. Again these bar chairs can be specified with upholstery to the seat or to the seat and back for added comfort. Steel design bar chairs are often chosen because they can be strong and inexpensive at the same time and can be purchased with any frame colour or chrome finish which gives a very fresh aspect to a brightly lit interior. The chrome chairs really benefit from having a colourfully upholstered seat or seat and back and again the fabric can be chosen to enhance to overall look of the interior. If the bar owners main aim is to provide comfortable dining a really popular choice is to use wooden framed leather dining chairs. In the last decade these chairs have become more and more popular as the leather finish gives any venue a classy look. These leather dining chairs are available in a wide variety of leather colours and the wooden legs are available in colours from light oak or pine colour through to the darkest oak or mahogany finish. These chairs have the ideal height for dining and are best suited to a wooden table in an uncomplicated style – for example the Shaker design which uses more simple lines to really good effect. Recently many bar owners have chosen to replace at least some of their regular bar chairs with leather sofas to give maximum comfort to their customers. A few of these in a large room give a really opulent feel and look very inviting indeed. A few bar sofas combined with coffee tables can attract and keep new customers and of course attracting and keeping customers is the most essential consideration for every bar owner.

Dining Chairs are chairs for dining tables in dining rooms…? Maybe a hundred years ago, or for a traditional household that has the space to label a room the “dining room”, and then of course they would have a dining table & dining chairs to fit into that space. BUT, for the majority of city dwellers, tendency would be to have a table and chairs which fits into a smaller space. Mind you the table is used for eating (aka dining table), and when eating at the table we are seated on chairs (guess they could be referred to as…dining chairs)…

Anyway, lets talk about the transition from the formal dining room to the modern day kitchen area. Here is a little more for you city dwellers to digest about the dining room and its furniture… A dining room is a room for consuming food. In modern times it is usually adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval times it was often on an entirely different floor level. Historically the dining room is furnished with a rather large dining table and a number of dining chairs; the most common table shape is generally rectangular with two armed end chairs and an even number of un-armed side chairs along the long sides.

In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European nobility in castles or large manor houses dined in the Great Hall. This was a large multi-function room capable of seating the bulk of the population of the house. The family would sit at the head table on a raised dais, with the rest of the population arrayed in order of diminishing rank away from them. Tables in the great hall would tend to be long trestle tables with benches. The sheer number of people in a Great Hall meant it would probably have had a busy, bustling atmosphere. Suggestions that it would also have been quite smelly and smoky are probably, by the standards of the time, unfounded.

The thought of kids tables and chairs takes me back to when I was a youngster and my dad brought me home a table all for myself. It was my size and I thought it wonderful, but I had no chair to sit at. My dad made me that chair and I remember them both to this day. Kid’s tables and chairs make fantastic gifts and your kids will remember them all their lives. They are something that they can use, just like adults use their furniture, and give them a sense of responsibility, owning their own furniture.

You might not be able to make your kids their own chairs, but you can sure buy them online at great prices. There are lots of sites offering children’s furniture that they can use themselves, rather than just having their dolls and action men. If your children are interested in sports, how about a table and four stools in a sports theme. Enough seating for your kids and their friends. Or would they prefer an all star sports rocking chair? How about a desk with doorknobs in form of sports balls.

When it comes to office furniture, does it really have to be a battle between form and functionality? Who says that you can not have both? Gone are the days when heavy duty office furniture meant solid, heavyset wooden pieces with intricate gargoyle like carvings; and seat cushions with just as much padding as a pancake run over by a concrete paving machine.  Fortunately, there are now solidly made furniture that are both ergonomically designed and built for long term use. A very good example would be the numerous heavy duty office chairs coming out every season. Although most of them are still relatively bulky (as compared to flimsy looking counterparts,) they do get better mileage.

For one thing, heavy duty office chairs are quite comfortable for people who have larger builds. As most of you would know, there really is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all category, especially with chairs and most other seating pieces (like benches, couches, ottomans, sofas, stools, etc.) There are just some pieces that seem to fit people with zero gravity and just about the same dress size. Fortunately, heavy duty office chairs now have the support systems with the capacity to sustain heavier weights. The support systems for some office chairs can be fantastic. They can literally make sitting for long hours at a time easier on the back and the hind quarters, no matter what how lean or heavy you might become.

When considering hotel furniture the U.K. hotel owner, whether a large hotel chain or a single owner must think about finding a balance between choosing hotel chairs and tables that are of a quality that attracts customers and encourages them to come again and recommend the hotel to their friends and being affordable enough that the cost of them does not wipe out any benefit that replacing the old hotel furniture may bring. In these toughest of economic times when banks are at their most cautious with new lending this consideration is especially important and many private owners may consider deferring renewals until the economy improves. Many may not be able to – if their hotel furniture is to the point that it is worn out then the owner has little room for manoeuvre – to wait could mean disaster because they will lose their clientele and so their revenue stream. Of course another consideration is that the disastrous U.K. economy has led to a rapid and extreme fall in the value of the GB Pound again every major world currency, especially the U.S. Dollar and the Euro.

While this has had a real negative effect in terms of the cost of hotel furniture from the USA, Europe and the Far East, the positive effect is that U.K residents considering a holiday for their family this year are sure to be aware of how much extra a holiday to any European country will cost them and must have heard horror stories from their friends about how much more a pint or a meal costs now, let along accommodation if they are arranging this themselves. So there will be many potential holidaymakers in the UK planning a British holiday this year rather than a US or European one. So for the coastal trade and established areas of tourism this must be good news this year with rising demand giving the hotel owner the opportunity to enjoy high occupancy and even – heaven forbid – increase their room rates a little.

Right now there is a bewildering range of hotel furniture available. A simple internet search of hotel furniture will bring up many Companies offering anything from the most modern to the most traditional ranges of hotel chairs and tables in wood or steel, fully upholstered or with solid seat. When choosing a style that is right for their hotel the owner can consider the kind of client that they are attracting already and think if they need to keep the style the same or make changes to reinforce the style they have created or make changes in order to attract a different kind of customer. Of course the interior of the rooms must play a part in their choice too, as a hotel with oak timbered rooms is likely to look more than a little strange with modern chrome plated stacking chairs and steel framed tables!
